In addition to our own Sustainability Policy we are also members of the British Precast Sustainability Charter which sets targets for the precast concrete industry including reducing environmental impact.
There continues to be much confusion and inaccuracy within the construction industry over the carbon footprint of materials, especially concrete. As members of the British Precast Drainage Association (BPDA – formerly CPSA), Stanton Bonna proudly participated in the industry leading CPSA/Carbon Clear Study into the carbon footprint of concrete and plastic pipelines. This exacting study was conducted to widely recognised international standards and proved that the cradle-to-site greenhouse gas emissions of concrete pipes are generally better than plastic with up to 35% lower CO2e for DN 2100 pipes. It also showed DN 1200 circular precast manhole systems have a 30 to 43% lower carbon footprint compared to DN 1200 traditional manholes, 1250 x 1250mm box based manholes and DN 1050 plastic manholes.

SBC Rail Ltd are currently supplying innovative vibration mitigation track solutions to Crossrail.
The sleepers are primarily designed to attenuate noise and vibration whilst generating savings on both the track construction costs and programme.
The HAS is the result of a 10 year investment programme between Sateba and Alstom to develop a cost effective alternative to traditional floating slab track.

Almost 7 kilometres of precast concrete circular pipes and manholes were supplied to provide a strong and durable main drainage system under the Olympic Park, Olympic Village and Wetlands Area. Drainage from the Park concourse feeds into ponds to support natural flood plains and a wetland area which provides a habitat for wildlife.
250 metres of 1200mm diameter jacking pipes were installed for the sewer diversion through the Olympic Village. A further, 1800 metres of 1200mm diameter jacking pipes were supplied to Barhale Construction for the primary sewer under the Main Stadium. This No Dig solution ensured minimal disruption to other contractors working on the London 2012 construction site and helped to ensure tight deadlines were met.
Over 500 metres of various cable troughs with covers were supplied for the safe channelling of cables around Stratford and the Olympic Park. Installed by McNicholas Construction as part of the Network Utilities contract, some cable troughs included a specially designed locking system to secure the covers and prevent vandalism.
6000 twin block sleepers were supplied to Skanska Grant Rail JV for the Docklands Light Rail (DLR) Stratford extension. These popular sleepers are lightweight and easy to install and have been adopted for many light rail projects including Nottingham Express Transit and Manchester Metrolink.
John Armitt, Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) highlighted sustainability, safety, employment, training and equality as the five themes of legacy for the London 2012 Games.
Contractors were primarily sourced on the five legacy themes along with integrity and price, and Stanton Bonna ticked all the boxes.
High Speed 1 (CTRL)
Almost 260,000 twin block sleepers were supplied by Stanton Bonna and installed on Section 1 (Contract 570) of CTRL, the 46 miles (74 km) between the Fawkham Junction and the Channel Tunnel complex in Kent. A further 8,000 monoblock sleepers were also supplied mainly for connections to Network SouthEast. Both types of sleepers have Vossloh fastenings.
Stanton Bonna completed production of the twin block sleepers within 13 months to meet the tight project schedule and delivered an average of fifteen 24 tonne loads each day to site working closely with CTRL project manager Rail Link Engineering.
CTRL also commissioned the first UK use of Stanton Bonna’s Perforated Drainage Troughs. An innovative trackside drainage channel system, which was extensively employed to more effectively collect storm water and reduce maintenance costs on the line.
Over 21km of covered Perforated Drainage Troughs were supplied in various sizes. The main benefit of the drainage channel system is, in the event of siltation, the covers can be lifted and the channels cleaned with rods or pressure jetted. The channels can also be used for track bed sealing applications in environmentally sensitive areas.
Other Stanton Bonna products used on this project included: more than 33km of concrete Cable Troughs; Ballast Guards to contain turnout motors alongside the track and points heating cabinets; quick assembly modular Access Stairs ensuring safe, easy access via rail side embankments; Cable Draw Chambers for under track crossing; Concrete Pipes and Manholes for drainage, and GRP liners to re-line existing brick culverts under the high speed track and an adjacent track.
