Stanton Bonna staff had a brilliant day at the Rudridge* 7-a-side Football Tournament on Friday 14th June at Upton Park, the home of West Ham United. And they won!
Playing at the renowned football ground, which was once home to England’s World Cup winning Captain Bobby Moore, and playing with celebrity footballers was a double treat for the teams. The cast of football ‘legends’ included the host Tony Cottee, Phil Babb, Paul Allen, Rob Lee, Nigel Winterburn, Des Walker, Iain Dowie, Neil Webb, Paul Walsh, Ray Parlour and Frank Sinclair, who joined the Stanton Strikers for the day.
The added bonus of having a professional player with their experience and coaching skills was a definite advantage to each of the teams, with some needing more help than others!
The event saw a total of 10 teams each playing up to 7 enjoyable games over the glorious day.
The final was a tense affair between Charcon Athletic and Stanton Strikers. Both teams showed the effects of playing 7 matches in the hot London sunshine. Aching limbs meant penetrating runs were kept to a minimum with players conserving energy until the final few minutes when the deadlock was broken by Stanton Bonna’s sharp-shooting Commercial Co-ordinator Marc Moore. Spotting a gap through the tight defence, Marc drove a left-footed screamer into the bottom corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Stanton Strikers’ players and supporters went wild.
After finishing runners-up on previous occasions, Stanton Strikers’ determination ensured their slender lead was maintained until the final whistle. The officials and Charcon Athletic were then presented with awards before the Stanton Strikers team collected the prestigious 2013 Rudridge 7-a-side Tournament winners shield.
