The Stanton Strikers had a great day on Friday 23 May 2014 at the Rudridge 7-a-side Football Tournament* which was held at Upton Park, now known as West Ham United’s Boleyn Ground.
This impressive tournament entices Rudridge customers and suppliers to join a fun day of play with legends of football at this renowned football ground. Each team has the honour of a former professional footballer playing with them. These included Phill Babb, Tony Gale, Peter Beagrie, Darren Anderton, Dave Beasant, Iain Dowie, Paul Allen, Paul Walsh, Ray Parlour and Ray Houghton, plus West Ham and England star Tony Cottee and Rudridge Director, Alan Betteridge hosted the day.
Playing at this 35,000 capacity ground which is steeped in history is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity that will be long remembered. Especially when such greats as World Cup winning Bobby Moore graced the pitch not to mention more recent professionals including Paolo Di Canio.
With 10 teams playing up to 7 matches over the day it was an exciting tournament.
It was to be a challenging day for the Stanton Strikers with Daniel Cross falling badly on his right wrist and Peter Beagrie being split between playing for them and Naylors Nobblers! When the Strikers had to play Naylors Nobblers we were delighted that Phil Babb stepped in to support us – we drew one all!
Stanton Strikers got through to the quarter finals but Marshalls Menaces proved the stronger team and eventually reached the final – only to be beaten by Bretts Bullets the winning team, who also happened to beat us 4-1 earlier in the day!
Overall it was a great day and we would like to thank our host Alan Betteridge of Rudridge and the organisers Martin Rusz, Tony Hoskins and Jeff Garner for all their hard work in putting together another successful tournament.
The Stanton Strikers team members were Rob Cannon (goalkeeper/captain), Daniel Cross, Robert Rudd, Nick Welsh, Anthony Betteridge, Richard Wheller, Mark Curran and Peter Beagrie plus Phil Babb for one game.
*The event was held by Rudridge, distributors of groundwork & civil engineering materials and sponsored by Stanton Bonna, Marshalls, Day Aggregates, Charcon, Milton Pipes, Naylor Drainage, Brett Landscaping, Peter Savage, Wavin and Aco Plc.
